The Great Mound at Knowth was built over 5,000 years ago and is surrounded by 18 smaller satellite mounds carved with series of angular and spiral inscriptions. The Great Mound has two passages with entrances on opposite sides ending in a cruciform chamber. Carvings of lunar maps and lunar calendars are found on the walls.
